About the book
Ten English murder trials, 1849 to 1928, each turning on one piece of evidence, told from its own trial transcript.
In August 1898 Miss Camille Holland went into her bootmaker's shop on the Edgware Road to be measured for a new pair of boots. He kept the lasts he made them on. He did not see her again.
In April 1903 police digging in an old ditch at the Moat Farm in Essex found a small boot, a buttoned one, apparently a lady's left boot. Whether the body was hers turned on the bootmaker's word. "If it was not the body of Miss Holland," the judge asked the jury, "where is Miss Holland?"
